It’s me, again – Dave’s still a little busy so I haven’t been able to get a full article off him.
So, I’m afraid you’ll have to make do with me… again.
I know, I know… I’m not a natural story teller and my stories are a little bland in comparison but… what you gonna do, huh?
I’m not as clever, either, with all my brains probably in my fists.
Only thing is I’ve been punching the heavy bag for so many years, I’ve probably squished it to the point of no return.
Anyway, I wanna tell you a little story.
I had a personal training student around over the weekend come over for some serious self defence training.
He’d been training with me some time ago but had to stop due to his studies.
I trained him on Saturday and Sunday.
He used to live in Germany and he told me he did Muay Boran there for two years and was getting pretty good.
In fact, he said, he had been picked to compete for his club as he was one of the best.
The only thing is, after one session with me on Dave’s SDF syllabus, he said he felt sick.
Why?
Because, in one session with me, he learned more about self defence than he did in those two years doing Muay Boran.
Now, I like to think of myself as the Angelo Dundee of self defence.
I’m not bad at the practical – probably a heck of a lot better than Dundee was at boxing – but I’m an even better trainer of others.
But, I’m still nowhere near as good as Dave.
Let’s face it, he’s been training for over 40 years and instructing since the mid 1970s.
I’ve been in the martial arts for under 30 years and have only been instructing, properly, for about 15 years.
I think you can see the difference.
Not to mention the fact Dave knows a heck of a lot more about self defence and the martial arts than I do – I mean, he is known as Mr Knowledge.
So, my student has had two sessions and feels he’s much better prepared to defend himself than with those two years in Muay Boran.
What does that say about the SDF syllabus to you?
Am I a fan of Dave’s training?
You betcha.
In fact, after I discovered the SDF and Goshinkwai, I turned my back on everything else.
And, as well as training a few times with Dave, I’ve trained plenty from his DVDs.
I’ll tell you this for nothing, his instruction on his DVDs is a lot better than most others in person.
Here’s what my student said, in an email he sent to me today after reading this very article, about the last two days’ training:
“…I can only say it’s the true. I’ve learnt more in these 2 days than in the 2 years of Muay Thai and Muay Boran. Its great and hard hitting training! And my leg is still hurting from just that little tap. It’s great knowing how much damage one could make just by doing simple moves!”

Hi there
I totally agree with Mr Rezbi i have done muay boran for 2 years and i only started to learn Goshinkwai for 2 days and i agree that these two days of training were more helpful then the 2 years of Muay Boran because its hard hitting contact training and i really felt sick after the first session and i would recommend anyone who is serious about learning self defense to train Goshinkwai its easy simple BUT HARD HITTING its not fancy at all but will leave all the Heroes lying on the floor.
urm all depends what u did in your mauy thai! mate
Rezbi
when I did the first diploma course with dave and every other one come to that they were awesome such simple moves that cause so much pain.Dave(Mr Knowledge) is just so awesome would not like to see him in action it would be finished in seconds
Respectfully
Alex
skeptic,
Considering he was picked to fight for his club, what do you think?
Muay thai was my main art before and I enjoy it still, but I have to agree with my student about Dave’s system.
